Principle Introduction
MDO is a bolt-on system that can be added to most blown film lines. It significantly increases the tensile strength of the polyethylene film layers in this type of packaging by simply heating and stretching the PE layer, resulting in a multi-layer PE film that is comparable in strength to films using PET, while being fully recyclable and environmentally friendly.
Introducing MDO orientation into your film application can significantly increase the film's strength. The secant modulus was tested in standard and MDO modified films and the results showed significant improvement. Other benefits include a jump in optical performance and improved haze values.

The chemistry of the polymer plays a role in the stretching process. For example, PVC, PVDC, PA6, acid copolymers, and ionomers typically have high levels of shrinkage. For example, consider the acid copolymer and ionomer families. Higher acid levels provide greater hydrogen bonding. Ionomers are acid copolymers whose acid groups have been partially neutralized by metal salts and contain both hydrogen and ionic bonds. Increasing the acid level increases the shrinkage of blown film, as shown in Figure 2. Shrinkage vs. stretch ratio for two ionomers with different acid levels. Stretching steps
Preheat-raises the film temperature uniformly without putting wrinkles in the film. This increases the polymer mobility and allows greater stretching in the next step without film failure.
Drawing-stretches the film (up to 10×) by making it longer, which forces alignment of polymer molecules in the film. In this section one drawing roll runs faster than the other.
Annealing-locks in the properties and controls shrinkage.
